Route

About the route

The recommended route duration is two days.

The route is located in Plunge and Telsiai districts. Plunge is famous not only for spectacular sightseeing, but for truly plentiful culinary heritage. There are three manufacturers in the Samogitia National Park. Two sisters in the Visvainiai village prepare herbal teas, which they grow and gather themselves. When the harvest is gathered and dried the women offer to participate in the “Traditional Samogitian Plants” educational activity.

Farmers from Samogitia, who had an excellent pasture and German breeds of cattle, have produced more diverse meals than other Lithuanians. They consumed more milk products. Kastinys, which was produced in this land during paganism, is included now in the list of the protected European Union products. It is produced in the villages of Berzoras and Laumalenkai.

Other favourite Samogitian dishes found their place near the lakes of Plateliai, Berzoras and Ilgis. Travelling 50 km from the region of lakes and crossing the Samogitia capital Telsiai, you will see how carrot candies are produced. They and other Samogitian food are produced in Zarenai. Here you can find the secrets of the production of kvass and carrot candies during educational sessions.

The final stop is made up of six lakes, symbolizing the awaiting for sakotis of an impressive beauty, size and taste in the village of Kulio Dauba. The baking in the outdoor oven forms a scent of several kilometres. So the Samogitians have to boast and enjoy themselves, and most importantly to share! The sakotis cooking program runs during the warm season.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR PRODUCTION OF TREE CAKE

Tree cake – is a high and empty conditery bakery, which is baked on a rotary broach by pouring thin layers of dough. The tree cake came to Lithuania from Germany at the end of the nineteenth century, and it became popular in the whole region of Suvalkija. It was begun to be baked in parsonages and monasteries. A tree cake has been an integral part of the Lithuanian festive table since ancient times. The specialty is in the appearance and taste of a tree cake. When you make a cross-section, you can count how many dough layers have been added. The cooked cake can last for a year without losing its shape or taste. The long expiration term determines the popularity of the tree cake in the global market as well.

During the training, you will try to bake a tree-cake (that is how the foreigners call sakotis) on the bonfire and learn that sakotis is not easy to bake.

The duration of the educational program is 2 hours.

Activities: participation in the preparation of dishes, getting acquainted with the history of dishes, tasting.

Languages: Lithuanian, Russian, English.

Seasonality: Sakotis is baked in the outdoor oven from May to October.
